Ok, this book has been on my to-read list forever. I happened to come across it last week and decided that it was finally time to cross it off the list. I found it to be a quick, easy read, and the best word I could use to describe it would be average. While very predictable, I did like that Lucier included so many historical details from the time period. I also liked the strength and independence in Cleo’s character. I read “A Death Struck Year” by Makiia Lucier and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is about a girl named Cleo and her life when the Spanish Influenza hits around the 1920’s and how that impacts her. When her boarding school gets shut down and her family is away, she decides to be a volunteer nurse and help account for all of the thousands sick with this influenza. On the way, she meets new life-long friends and a new boy she ends up liking named Edmund. It is quite graphic about the sights she sees
